Barcelona survived a late fightback from Real Madrid and even a
horror show by their goalkeeper, Victor Valdes, to win the first leg of
their Super Copa game 3-2.
The first half ended without much action, but the game sprung into
life in the second half, after Cristiano Ronaldo headed Madrid into the
lead. The reply from the Catalans was instant. Javier Mascherano swept
the ball over for Pedro, who controlled superbly and slotted the ball
past Iker Casillas.
Lionel Messi put Barça into the lead from the spot, after Andres
Iniesta was fouled by Sergio Ramos. Iniesta was also instrumental in
his side’s third goal, as he found Xavi steaming into the box and sent
a delicate pass into his path, for him to finish past Casillas.
With his team coasting away with a two-goal lead, ahead of their
second leg next week, Victor Valdes inexplicably dallied on the ball
and allowed Angel Di Maria pull one back.
